Chapter 23

At half past six, on the button, Ben and Roman walked into the restaurant, where they had agreed to meet the boys for dinner.

Jalen had made the reservations the night before, probably just to make sure Piper wouldn't have any reason not to show up.

They had a table in the best spot. He and Stanton were already there, talking quietly, while he focused on his phone again.

“Did you tell him yet?” Roman asked Stanton, as he took his seat across from him.

He nodded, but didn't look happy.

“How did he take it?” he wondered, taking the menu Ben offered. He sat right next to him, but the seat on the other side was empty and he hoped to God that Jaxton didn't take it.

“He acted like it was no big deal. I'm not sure he'll show up,” Stanton admitted, looking sad.

“And your boyfriend?” he asked, hopeful for some good news.

Stanton smiled at him. “Well, he's my boyfriend. He's never been that before, so I'm just trying to figure out how to feel about that, while Thayer is bearing the brunt of my mistake.” He shrugged.

Roman lay his hand on his, trying to offer what support he could. “He'll be okay. You both went into last night with no agreement of what it meant. As far as both of you know, it was a one night only performance. Nothing else,” he promised that it would get better.

Stanton nodded and smirked at him, as Ben lay his arm along the back of his chair and absently ran his fingers through his hair.

“You didn't know about his crush,” Roman soothed. “You didn't know how he would feel about it,” he said, trying to distract himself from the teasing touch.

“Roman's right. It's not your fault,” Ben reassured him.

“Thanks guys.” He looked relieved, before letting out an exasperated sigh and turning to Jalen. He gave him a nudge, so that he would drag his attention away from his phone. “What do you do on that thing all day?” he asked.

“Candy Crush Saga. I'm addicted to it,” Jalen confessed, with a chuckle.

“Well, you might want to put it away, when Piper shows up. She's not a fan of technology. She's a bit old school,” Roman warned him, with a friendly smile.

“Fine,” he agreed without a fuss, shutting his phone off and putting it in his pocket. “So did you decide you weren't coming back to campus yet?” he asked, as if he already knew what decision he was going to make.

Ben just smiled, so he leaned into him and gave a one shouldered shrug.

“Yes. It's not for me. I've spent too long having my own schedule, doing my own thing. I haven't done the school thing since I was seventeen, so it's a bit weird starting up again. I'll have Emery call them tomorrow.” He nodded, deciding that it had to be done, sooner rather than later. The more distance he put between himself and Jaxton the better.
